Please remember that you can support your child at home by engaging with their home learning.

SJTB home learning model

• Year R – Tadpoles — Weekly reading to rehearse the application of the phonics sounds they are learning in school. Reading should be recorded on the half‑term reading log sheet provided. Weekly handwriting sheets will be sent home from January.

• Year 1 – Frogs and Year 2 – Ducks — Weekly reading (to rehearse phonics application). Reading should be recorded on the half‑term reading log sheet provided. In addition, an optional homework sheet will be sent home, including:

  • a reading comprehension task

  • a maths task

  • a grammar/phonics task

  • spellings

• Year 3 – Swans, Year 4 – Otters, Year 5 – Dragonflies and Year 6 – Kingfishers — Non‑optional homework, given on a Wednesday and returned the following Wednesday. The single printed sheet will include:

  • a reading task

  • a maths task

  • a grammar task

  • spellings to practise using the SOS spelling technique (children already use this in school)

  • a box for children to record:

    • the number of reads completed each week

    • the number of times they have completed an activity on TT Rockstars (We aim for a minimum of 4 reads and 2–3 TT Rockstars sessions per week.)

All tasks set are based on learning children have already covered in class. The aim is to strengthen retrieval, reinforce key knowledge and skills, and support long‑term understanding.

Some of the reading texts may feel challenging for certain children;  however, they are age‑appropriate. If your child finds a text difficult, you are very welcome to read it aloud to them. Hearing rich and ambitious vocabulary supports language development, comprehension and confidence.

It's as simple as that! Then you have access to lots of books, magazines, audio books etc. you can increase font size if you need larger text and change background colours if you find it easier to read on a background colour! If English is your second language you can even select another language!
