JRSO & Travel Safe
Junior Road Safety Officers
At St John’s, we actively promote active and sustainable travel, encouraging children to develop healthy habits while caring for the environment. Pupils are taught how to travel safely within their community and beyond, gaining essential road safety knowledge and awareness skills.
We place a strong emphasis on educating children about the benefits of walking, cycling, and using sustainable modes of transport. Supporting this initiative is our dedicated pupil voice group, the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), who play a key role in championing safe and responsible travel across our school community.
The team hope to share their knowledge about road safety to help educate the school on how to keep safe.
Please see the parking leaflet below as a starting point.
What is the Travel Plan?
The travel plan is a document that records information about our school, its setting, and the travel behaviour of parents, pupils and teaching staff. It also includes a summary of identified issues, the targets set by the Travel Plan team to ensure safe and healthy travel to school and address issues, and the actions in place to achieve these targets.
Our plan shows that current behaviour is positive, in that the majority of pupils travel to school by walking, cycling and scooting. However, there is potential to do even better and the school travel survey has highlighted a number of key objectives:
- To encourage and enable more children and parents to walk to and from school and ensure parents and pupils feel safe to do so.
- To encourage and enable more pupils who have bicycles or scooters to consider cycling or scooting to school and back with parents.
- Where appropriate, encourage car sharing between parents of the school.
- To ensure that Road Safety education is provided to all to ensure safer journeys to and from school.
- To raise awareness of the health benefits of leaving the car at home and the alternatives amongst children and parents.
- To communicate in a proactive manner with residents regarding school travel issues.
- To promote and enable alternatives to the car and reduce car use (for staff and visitors).
We are proud to have achieved our Gold award from Modeshift stars for our work as a school in promoting and supporting sustainable travel.
