Climate Action at SJTB

Sustainability Leadership and Climate Action at St John the Baptist

At St John the Baptist, we are committed to meeting the national ambition for all education settings to have a nominated sustainability lead and a clear climate action plan. This reflects the Department for Education’s wider strategy to embed sustainability across schools and supports our own commitment to long‑term, meaningful action. As part of this commitment, we have joined the Let’s Go Zero campaign, a national movement uniting schools working towards a zero‑carbon future. Becoming part of this initiative strengthens our efforts, connects us with expert guidance, and places us alongside thousands of other schools taking practical climate action.

Our climate action plan is shaped by the four national pillars: adaptation and resilience, biodiversity and nature, climate education and green skills, and decarbonisation. Through this framework, we aim to improve energy efficiency, enhance our natural environment, reduce emissions and empower pupils with the knowledge and skills to shape a sustainable future.

Our approach is deeply rooted in our core values of compassion, creativity and courage. We show compassion by caring for our planet and each other, ensuring that our actions protect the world our children will inherit. We use creativity to explore innovative solutions, inspire curiosity and encourage new ways of thinking about sustainability. And we act with courage, taking purposeful steps to address climate challenges and lead positive change within our school and community.

By embedding sustainability into our culture, curriculum and daily practice, St John the Baptist is building resilience, nurturing responsible global citizens and inspiring every learner to contribute to a greener, more hopeful future.

Climate action is important to us here at SJTB, and we are fortunate to have Waltham Chase Meadows, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), right behind our school. We regularly use this unique environment to support our learning, explore local wildlife, and help children understand the importance of protecting and valuing the natural world.
