Sports Premium

At St John the Baptist Primary School, we believe that all young people should have the opportunity to live healthy, active and fulfilling lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity in childhood can build lifelong habits and supports the government’s ambition for a world‑class education system. Our approach to PE and sport reflects our core values of Compassion, Courage and Creativity, ensuring every child feels supported, challenged and inspired.

Physical activity brings significant benefits to children’s physical health and mental wellbeing. It helps to build self‑esteem, emotional resilience and confidence, while reducing anxiety. Children who are active are often happier, more trusting of their peers and better equipped to manage challenges. Regular activity also supports improved behaviour and enhances academic achievement.

The School Sport and Activity Action Plan sets out the government’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people access at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity each day, with 30 minutes recommended during the school day. This aligns with the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines, which recommend an average of at least 60 minutes of activity per day across the week.

In April 2013, as part of the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics, the Government introduced £150 million of additional funding for Physical Education and Sport. This funding—now totalling £320 million nationally—is allocated directly to primary schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, physical activity and sport. Schools have the flexibility to decide how best to use this funding to improve the breadth and quality of their provision.

At St John the Baptist Primary School, we review our provision each year to ensure that the PE and sport premium is used in ways that have the greatest impact for the greatest number of pupils. Guided by our values:

  • Compassion ensures that all children, regardless of ability or background, are included and supported.

  • Courage encourages pupils to challenge themselves, try new activities and persevere.

  • Creativity inspires us to offer a rich, varied and engaging PE curriculum and range of sporting opportunities.

We are committed to using our PE and sport premium grant to strengthen our provision and to inspire our children not only to participate now, but to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and sport.

Full details of how much PE and sport premium funding we receive, and how we allocate and evaluate its impact, can be found in the documents below.
