Science

At St John the Baptist Primary School, we believe that science sparks curiosity and inspires children to explore the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to encourage all pupils to ask questions, investigate ideas, and develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the future.

Set within semi‑rural grounds rich in wildlife, our school provides unique opportunities to observe and explore the natural world, bringing science to life every day. Guided by our values of courage and creativity, children are inspired to take risks in their investigations, build resilience, foster innovation, and nurture a lifelong love of learning. Through a rich, enquiry‑based curriculum, we ensure that every child is empowered to think scientifically, make connections across subjects, and embrace the wonder of discovery.

Using the Hampshire Science Model, alongside the National Curriculum objectives, we ensure that all pupils:

  • Explore their ideas, conduct investigations, and record their experiences

  • Progress in their understanding and skills as they move through school

  • Build knowledge and apply prior learning to lessons and investigations

Guided by the Hampshire learning journeys, the science curriculum is divided into a series of units from Year 1 to Year 6. Each unit focuses on a particular theme and is carefully designed to build on previous knowledge, embedding and deepening learning over time.

Through science at St John’s, we want children to:

  • Take ownership of their knowledge and understanding through problem‑solving, projects, and investigations

  • Be inspired by scientists past and present from around the world

  • Apply key scientific vocabulary confidently and appropriately

  • Use investigations, experiments, and informal science activities in their daily lives

  • Evaluate their own and others’ work with reference to prediction, purpose, impact, and outcomes

By the time they leave St John’s, pupils will have developed curiosity, resilience, and confidence in science, preparing them to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

What our children say:

“I enjoyed planting cress to watch it grow.”

“I like having problems to solve.”
